Spread a Little Sunshine is currently going through the process of becoming a charity which is very exciting. We are a kindness charity, our tag line is, “Spread Love Spread Hope Spread a Little Sunshine”. Our mission statement is “Spread a Little Sunshine spreads love, hope and happiness to the people and communities that need it the most” How we hope to achieve this is this:
Sunshine Communities – The Vision – six elements:
1 – “The 7-day Sunshine Kindness Challenge” – This is the flag ship idea that the “Sunshine Communities” will grow around. If you get the local schools, its pupils and parents on board, the potential to get the whole community embracing this concept will be significantly easier. I have devised a 10-minute Power Point presentation that brilliantly demonstrated the benefits of kindness but most importantly talks about the emotions felt by both the giver and receiver of such kind acts. The children will then be asked to complete a 7-day kindness challenge (including stickers and cards), on completion, the children receive a badge and certificate. They are then on #teamsunshine which means they agree to repeat the 7-day sunshine challenge each and every year on the last week of September. The kids are then given a sunshine mission, to get the rest of their family, including adults, to also complete a 7-day sunshine challenge. The idea is that this is then repeated for each school year as the years go by. The numbers of people on #teamsunshine will keep growing year on year.
2 – “Stop and Spread Sunshine Sunday” events – no social media or I pads whilst at the events. Encouraging different sections of the community to come together. Previous successful examples: Rounders tournaments, organised hikes, family fun days, family sports day.
3 – “The Youth Pub” – aimed at teenagers. Working with local pubs creating nights for 13 – 17 yr olds. Pub quizzes (taking away their phones for an hour), music, local bands, open Mic nights, free food, inspirational speakers. Introducing kids to pubs responsibly, inviting parents to join them for the last hour. Encouraging families to socialise together.
4 – “Club 60 – 100” – The community organises regular events, aimed at this age group. Using local pick up/drop off schemes to help plus local volunteers. Quiz nights, bingo, play your cards right, dancing, Christmas parties, interacting with other age groups within the community, helping them feel less isolated and more included. This concept is again something that can be easily copied and rolled out by all future Sunshine Communities.
5 – “Spread a Little Sunshine Boomerang Bags” – the Co – op or local small supermarket are given or buy 100 ORANGE bags (cost £1 each). These bags belong to the community. When someone forgets their shopping bag, instead of buying a plastic bag, they “borrow” a boomerang bag. They will then return the boomerang bag the next time they go back to the local Co-op or supermarket. Alongside these bags are Spread a Little Sunshine YELLOW bags that the public can buy. They will cost £5, the money raised will go towards community projects with a percentage going to Spread a Little Sunshine.
6 – “The SmileHi Club” – This idea is so so simple but brilliant. Spread a Little Sunshine or maybe the kids from the local schools go into each business within the local area and ask them if they would like to be in the “SmileHi Club”. Giving each business a big sticker to display in their window. They can also state on their websites that they are in the “SmileHi Club” and support the concept and support the idea of creating “Sunshine Communities”. The idea is very simple, the staff involved with the business agree to ‘smile’ and ‘say hi’ to all their customers and fellow colleagues. We would love this idea to be driven from the top down, leading by example.
This whole ‘Sunshine Community’ concept can be duplicate in any community the world over. Once up and running the website can host each communities’ events, like a notice board. Nationally people can search for Spread a Little Sunshine events in their local area.
Over the next few months this is going to be Spread a Little Sunshine’s focus. We really do believe in these ideas and believe that they can make a huge difference to peoples lives.
